JUST 18 months after making a significant investment in swanky new offices here, a Gisborne real estate agency is setting up a second office in Hawke’s Bay, with people around New Zealand already clamouring for it to expand even further.

With the Gisborne real estate market thriving, Bronwyn Kay Real Estate founder and chief executive Bronwyn Kay said demand for services was such the company now planned to open a new office in Napier by the middle of next month.

“We were in Hawke’s Bay about a year ago at a function where there was an awful lot of people who had dealt with us in Gisborne, and they were asking ‘why don’t you bring Bronwyn Kay to the ‘Bay’?

“It was a throw away line and we didn’t give it much thought at first because we were happy in Gisborne and had just opening a whole new office here, but we just kept getting pestered from people, from all over New Zealand, who were saying we don’t have one of you in our city and we’d like one.

“Hawke’s Bay just presented itself. We had some good agents approach us ready for a change and a fresh new approach to real estate, which they said we have.

“People are asking me if I will go into other areas now. I don’t have the answer to that but - just watch this space - who knows what will happen when people get a taste of it.”

Housing market 'on fire'

There were similarities with the state of play in Hawke’s Bay, where the housing market was “on fire”.

“There is a shortage of listings, of quality homes and again what we’ve been told is that people want to work with people they trust and have a good knowledge of the area. BK in the Bay was established for the same reason Bronwyn Kay was established in Gisborne, to provide the same quality service to our clients and make a difference in our community.

“I’ve been in this industry for 36 years, and the last 18 months for Gisborne have been so exciting. There is a new calibre of entrepreneurs and businesses coming into this city. They are bringing their families, they are bringing entrepreneurship, and they are bringing revenue.”

She did not see it as a drawback that the agency was not part of a nationally-recognised franchise.

“We are pretty much like a franchise but we don’t have a CEO over our heads who is not in our city, or even our country, and who doesn’t know our clients. That means we can make calls based on our local knowledge and we are now doing the same in Hawke’s Bay.”

Bronwyn Kay Real Estate was set up about nine-and-a-half years ago as a “boutique agency”.

The Gisborne branch moved from it previous location on Customhouse Street to new premises at Gisborne’s inner harbour 18 months ago.

Establishing an office in the Ahuriri fishing village in Napier, just two hours from Gisborne, meant she could personally be involved with both the Gisborne offices.

“It will be a very intimate team, a hand-picked team at this stage - and we’ll just do what we did here.

“It’s all about service, reputation, my team and local knowledge. For the nine-and-a-half years we have been going we’ve put people before profit.

“We are also more able to respond to the market in seconds, rather than waiting for a director from a head office.

"I’m here on the ground and I can respond very quickly and that’s a lot different from someone who's over in Singapore saying what’s happening over there.”

“Although the big brands talk about having a worldwide spread, everyone can reach the world through the internet. So our brand, and the BK logo, can reach the world.”
