TOURISTS appear to be spending up big to keep warm this winter, as new figures show a $1.3 million spike in spending.

The latest Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates released by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) show that tourists to Gisborne spent $11m last month, bringing the total tourism spend for Gisborne to $136 million for the year to May 2017. That equates to a five percent rise compared with the year to May 2016.

MBIE Manager of Sector Trends Mark Gordon said of that, international visitors spent $29 million (up 12 per cent compared with the year to May 2016), and domestic tourists spent $107 million (up three per cent) in that period.

“When it comes to the monthly expenditure, tourism spend in Gisborne for the month of May 2017 is up 12 per cent compared with May 2016,” Mr Gordon said.
