To market with Gisborne students

Blaise Hubbard from Gisborne Girls’ High School was also at the market, selling her team’s Balance Skate, a skateboard made from recycled wood with a laser print design. The group has been working on the product since March under the guidance of GGHS Careers educator and adviser Justine Ward. Their point of difference is the product is made of recycled wood and features designs based on nature and its flora and fauna.

GISBORNE students got some real life experience when they took their products to market as part of the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES), where students set up and run a real business.

YES regional coordinator Lena Bevan from the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce said it was also a large part of their marks criteria.

“In preparation for the market day selling opportunity student companies need to work on marketing and promotional material for their business/product, presentation of product and customer service which are all key elements factored into the sales process," Ms Bevan said.

“Attending the market day also secures points towards their regional marks, which I collate throughout the year.

"Teams must provide sufficient evidence in order to obtain points towards their regional coordinator marks. For example minutes of meetings held each term must be submitted, business cards provided as well as company website information.

“All coordinator marks are due in to Wellington YES HQ at the end of term 3. This along with Dragons Den scores and annual reviews will be collated to determine who the regional winner is. The regional winner will be announced at our awards evening in October.”

The National final is happening in Wellington on December 6 where the winning teams will take home a share of $22,000 in prize money.

YES has proved popular throughout the country and has resulted in the development of many businesses in the 15 years it has been running. It was introduced back to Gisborne last year after a seven year hiatus. It allows students to learn about business, develop a range of skills and create networks in their community.
