Inspirational hymn, The Mary Ellen Carter, that tells the story of a heroic effort to salvage a sunken ship, is the opening track on Irish-influenced band Barleycorn’s new CD All at Sea.

Written by Stan Rogers, the song is credited with saving the life of a Marine Electric crewAlone, and up to his neck in freezing water, he saved himself from slipping into unconsciousness by singing the last stanzas of Rogers’ song.

The album is packed with such seafaring songs as Stan Ridgeway’s Hanging Johnny, and Sir HS Robertson’s Mingulay Boat Song, as well as traditional favourites like Sloop John, Haul Away Joe, and Drunken Sailor.

The album’s theme originated with a musical set that featured the sea when the band performed as part of the 2016 lead up to commemorations next year of first contact in 1769 between explorer James Cook and tangata whenua.

The band, made up of Colin Olsen, Sarah Olsen, Judy Poulsen and Brendon Gill, enjoyed the performance so much they made a recording of songs that range from traditional to pieces composed as recently as the 1980s.

  • Barleycorn will launch All at Sea at the Gisborne Bowling Club on April 6. Walter the Wiz will MC the event. Pre-sale tickets are $5 and can be ordered at sarah@454.net.nz.
