Stripped back theatre at Unity

Calendar Girls

The true story of a group of women who produced a nude calendar to raise money for leukaemia research is the basis of Calendar Girls.

Unity Theatre will next month hold auditions for a stage production of the comedy.

In the stage production, Yorkshire Women’s Institute members plan to pose nude for a calendar which will be sold to help raise funds for the purchase of a new sofa for the hospital waiting room.

WI members Annie and Chris persuade four friends and fellow WI members to pose nude with them for the “alternative” calendar.

They are helped by hospital porter and amateur photographer Lawrence.

The plan is to the horror of their WI chairman, Marie. The calendar is wildly successful and before long the women raise the money needed and much more. Their efforts also catch the attention of the national and international press, who soon descend on their small village.

Although the calendar is a huge success, Chris and Annie’s friendship is put to the test with their new-found fame and Chris is forced to question her real motivation behind doing the calendar.

Auditions will be held at Unity Theatre, Ormond Road, Sunday December 8.

Audition material will be available later this month.
