WAIMATA dog triallist Merv Utting produced a fine 98-point run with seven-year-old dog Prince to win the J and T Hickey Charity sheep dog title at the RDA pavilion at Showgrounds Park on Saturday afternoon.

Utting also took third place with his 10-year-old bitch Briar, on 93 points.

“The final went well. I got some pretty good sheep and Prince worked them really well,” he said.

“I have not won this trial for a few years, so it was good to do it again — to have a good run with a good dog.”

Pukekohe triallist Laura Geering, also with a dog named Prince, finished second on 93.5 points.

There were more than 140 runs in the charity trial this year.

“We are very happy with how it all turned out,” said trials chairman Laurence Rau.

“We’ve had quite a few new competitors this year, which was good to see, and we have had a pretty high standard of work over the two days.”

The ewe lambs used were from Papatu Station at Manutuke.

“The sheep were testing and they made a real dog trial out of it,” Mr Rau said.

“It was good to see that ‘young fella’ Merv Utting get up and win it. He did a pretty good job.”
