Strong interest at Matawhero

File picture

JUST 313 sheep and 6 feeder calves were yarded at the Matawhero Friday sale, the first sale for two weeks.

There was strong meat processor interest in the prime sheep, in order to keep the plants operating until the new season’s lambs arrive in two to three weeks time. Consequently one big prime lamb from Duncan Carmichael fetched a season’s high price of $191.

A pen of 14 heavy shorn, prime ewes from Emirau Station topped this section at $129. In the store sheep section there were three pens of ewes with lambs at foot, a pen of nine young ewes with 13 docked lambs from Robert Redpath at Wairata sold for $90 all counted. There were only 15 store lambs offered. The best bull calf from Colin Kerr at Ngatapa made $162, the six calves concluding his offering for this spring.
