The sale of in-calf cows was a feature of the monthly cattle fair at Matawhero yesterday amid a total yarding of 1832 head, 400 more head than advertised.

The best of the in-calf cows sold for $1510, a line of 40 mixed age Angus capital stock cows from H and KJ McMillan at Rere, who have recently sold their farm.

This was the first pen auctioned and prices generally declined from then on.

Matawhero had very successful weaner fairs last month, but prices have been easing all around NZ since and now the local market has suffered a correction. The best cows were bought by local farmers, the lesser types by meat processors, who were paying $1.50 to $2.05/Kg.
