Mostly lambs in Matawhero sale

Higher prices likely due to smaller yarding

Higher prices likely due to smaller yarding

A YARDING of only 771 were present at yesterday’s weekly sheep sale at the Matawhero saleyards, 1000 less than last week and all except three were lambs.

Buyers paid several dollars more per head this week, probably influenced by the rising meat schedule and the smaller yarding.

The 12 prime lambs averaged $171, the top price was $188 paid for eight big, fat lambs from P.W.Bennett.

In the store pens there were slightly more ewe lambs than males and the best price was $150 for 39 male lambs from Bushy Knoll Forest Ltd at Hangaroa.

A pen of 33 ewe lambs from the same vendor also made $150.

Best prices:

Male store lambs; Bushy Knoll Forest Ltd, 39, $150, 28, $125, 10, $91; G.J and M.E Hope (Motu), 121, $136.50; Burnage Station P/S (Matawai), 14, $122, 40, $109, 11, $99, 19, $50.

Do you think Gladstone Road Bridge should have its concrete parapet walls converted to steel railings on one or both of its sides as part of the upgrade and widening under way?
