First Kiwifruit on way to Asia

THE first charter vessel carrying Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit to China and Japan has sailed from Tauranga with 3000 pallets on board, including 1600 pallets from Gisborne.

It follows the earlier than usual start to the kiwfruit harvest this season.

The Southampton Star picked up more than half the consignment in Gisborne over three days last week and then went to Tauranga to load the rest on Friday.

It sailed from that port on Sunday night. Industry experts predict another bumper crop this season.

Three or four more consignments have been scheduled from Gisborne this season between now and May.

Zespri chief grower and alliances officer David Courtney said in total Zespri expected more than 600,000 pallets of kiwifruit to be shipped offshore this season.
