Price dip for steers and bulls

BIG LINE-UP: A yarding of more than 3200 head greeted buyers on day one of the Weaner Fair at the Matawhero saleyards yesterday. In line with other parts of the country the prices dipped somewhat. A TOTAL of 3215 weaner steers and bulls greeted a large crowd of spectators and buyers on day one of the Matawhero Weaner Fair yesterday.

Prices at recent nationwide sales have been lower than last year’s high prices and this trend continued here, lowering from $20 to $195 on the main lines of steers, even though many were several kgs heavier this year.

The exception to this trend was the annual consignment of Hereford bulls from the Nettleton Partnership at Te Karaka.

This year their top price was $1300, $80 up from 2018. These bulls will probably have a career serving dairy heifers.

The star pens of steers and bulls sold from $3.45 to $4.13/kg.

Buyers from Hawke’s Bay, Rangitikei, King Country and Waikato purchased many of these big lines, leaving the small pens for local buyers, though these pens were over supplied, many 200kg steers and bulls selling for less than $3/kg.

Most of the cattle were Angus and Angus-cross, all showing good body condition, reflecting the excellent growing season.

Best price of $1055 for the steers went to Pukekaka Station at Tikitiki for 38 charolais, weighing 295kgs.

About 1000 head of weaner heifers were presented for sale today.
