Fewer outsiders affected prices

THE major feature of Tuesday’s Matawhero Cattle Fair were the vetted-in-calf mixed aged cows and rising 3 year heifers that were keenly sought after though prices were down from 2018.

Pukeroa Station at Ngakoroa received $1325 for 14 six–eight year cows weighing 590 kgs.

Puketia Station P/S at Te Wera sold 17 R3 year heifers (465 kgs) for $1200, $300 less than than last year.

Prices at the autumn cattle fairs at Matawhero have been adversely affected by there being fewer buyers from other districts, due to their drought conditions.

Yesterday there was just one buyer from Whakatane and another from Taumarunui for the 1556 cattle on offer. The younger cattle sold at recent prices, many of the weaners appeared to be born late.

R2 year steers sold from $2.76 to $3.46/kg, R2 year heifers $2.05 to $2.83/kg, R2 year bulls $2.43/kg, weaner steers $2.21 to $3.63/kg, weaner heifers $2.40 to $3.30/kg, weaner bulls $2.81 to $2.85/kg.
