Better lambs hold value

There were more store lambs sent for sale at Matawhero yesterday, a total of 1736, compared with 1071 last week, and while the average price dropped $14 to $145, the better short-term lambs held their value.

There were also many more prime sheep available and 83 prime lambs sold from $151 to $216 for a pen of 12 from Reginald Proffit.

The 160 prime ewes averaged $144, selling from $116 to $172.

Mangaheia Station at Tolaga Bay sold two pens of scanned in-lamb, mixed-age ewes.

Their first pen of 76 had been mated to terminal sires on February 15 and sold for $224.

Their second pen of 35 had been mated to Romney rams on March 15 and made $198.

Both lots have been predicted to lamb on the third cycle.

The two pens of store (scanned dry) ewes sold for $137 and $101.
