This place is awesome

How does it feel to fly halfway across the world to another country away from my home and family?

More like, how does it feel to live a life suddenly turned upside down?

To be honest some things are really weird. For example the fact that the cars are driving on the other side of the street, or that the water turns in the opposite direction, because of gravity.

But these are only the cliché changes, there are so much more especially in Gisborne.

Maybe you think that your town is boring and you can’t wait to get out of here, but let me tell you a secret - this place is awesome.

You have everything you need. There are so many different kinds of small, unique shops, cafés and restaurants.

You have a movie theatre where you can have funny evenings with your friends too.

However, the best of all is the wonderful nature around you.

You can go to the beach whenever you want to, lie down in the fine, soft sand, enjoy the warm rays of sunlight and watch the sunset on the horizon.

Many of my friends have never been to the beach before. They can only imagine how it feels to watch the sunrise over the sea, so far away from where we are.

The point where the sky touches the sea, the horizon feels so much closer because there is nothing that blocks the view except a few breaking waves or small boats with white sails.

Normal hobbies where I am from in Germany are shopping, reading, watching movies, meeting friends or playing some kind of sport like football, basketball or handball.

These are things you can do here as well but you have so much more exciting things to offer, for example rugby, surfing or all the other things you can do in outdoor education.

In Germany I slept for so long at the weekends, it was ridiculous. Don’t get me wrong, I still love to lie in my bed as long as possible just doing nothing - maybe this is what teenagers do - but I have to say that it is so much easier here to get up in the morning and do something.

Especially on the mornings when I go out and join in on a surfing lesson.

It is an amazing feeling to get up, already tasting the salty and unique taste of the New Zealand sea on your lips because you can’t wait to drop your head onto your board and try to catch some waves.

I have fallen in love with surfing.

When you start dreaming about it like this, you realise that you are addicted to the sea, the waves, a surf board and everything else that defines New Zealand.

The sea makes it so much harder and it breaks my heart that I have to leave this beautiful paradise with these awesome people.

Especially my host family who didn’t know me at all but welcomed me into their family and made me a part of it.

Now they know me better than the most people I knew for my whole lifetime.

They became a second family for me, maybe even more then that.

They have defined my life in away nobody else has before.

If somebody was to ask me if I would like to live my life again, I would do everything exactly the same because I can’t imagine a life without them.

If I was given the opportunity to do a student exchange again I would totally go for it and recommend it to anyone else considering it.

I think it’s an amazing experience and I will go back to Germany a new person.
