“I mean seriously, get yourselves together”

ROMEO AND JULIET, Leonardo Di Caprio, 1996,(c) 20th Century Fox

So this year in my class we are learning about Shakespeare’s tragic play Romeo and Juliet.

I have to say they certainly liked to rush things in the 16th century. I mean this play took place over just five days.

In a matter of days a 13-year-old fell in love with a 16-year-old and believed in it so much she died over it.

Romeo committed several felonies, was banished, moved away then came back to die - I guess she went for the bad boys?

This story is completely impractical I mean seriously, get yourselves together.

I can definitely say that Juliet is not my role model, she had so much potential and she blew it over a guy. That sounds kind of familiar to be honest.

I mean imagine if she had just stopped and thought about her future, sure it wouldn’t have been with her first love but you can fall in love more than once.

Better yet what if Romeo had stopped and mourned for his beloved Juliet, instead of rushing in and killing himself in 10 minutes.

If he had just stopped, cried and sunk to the ground in sadness he could have avoided the whole scenario but no, he thought ‘damn I guess I should see her as fast as I can’.

He couldn’t waited five minutes to let his repressed emotions out for and Friar Laurence to arrive at the tomb and explain?

We also could have avoided the whole problem if male ego hadn’t been involved.

Romeo’s when he was shown first seeing Roselyne, Tybalt’s when he got angry and wanted revenge, Mercutio’s when he was defending the Montague name instead of Romeo, Friar’s when he didn’t bother to take more caution when delivering the letter to Romeo, Paris’ when trying to defend Juliet and finally Romeo’s again - when he thought he should die to be with his second love of whom he met like three days ago.

I mean get it together and calm the hell down.

These boys were so intent on growing their self confidence, they didn’t once stop to think ‘hey this could seriously go wrong for me’, or ‘damn I better get a hold of myself, before I get myself or someone else hurt’.

To be fair it does seem like something some young guys would do - many girls would prefer to have verbal fights.

I’m not saying our fav dead leading character is the perfect character either I mean, falling in love in five days?

It’s completely inaccurate and as a 14-year-old girl I wouldn’t even consider doing that for a guy I met five days ago, even if he was drop dead gorgeous.

She also happened to decide to make it impossible to marry Paris by officially consummating hers and Romeo’s marriage at 13.

What was she thinking getting married at that age and so fast?

Overall it was a good play in terms of drama and morals but I seriously would ask them to rethink their life choices for a moment, and just reflect on how unnecessary some, if not most of their actions were. Just think about the fact that if they had simply taken time to do so, the whole crisis could have been avoided.
