Feel

Imagine someone you love with all your heart,

Someone you’d do anything for,

Someone who’ll do anything for you.

Feel the heartache that comes with the thought of them leaving you,

The thought of them never returning,

The thought of their never existing.

Hear the harmful words you threw around in anger,

The words born of some unimportant emotion,

The words that ruined the relationship between you.

Feel the tears burn your eyes as you remember the hurt they felt because of you,

The disappointment and sadness,

The loathing and resenting you put there.

See them lose their desire to be around you,

See them packing a suitcase,

See them slamming the front door.

Feel that quiver in your legs just before you fall,

Before you crumble inside and out,

Before you suddenly realise what you’ve done.

Taste the salt of your own tears knowing you did this to yourself,

Knowing you made someone you love leave,

Knowing you’re to blame for their departure.

Feel the eeriness at suddenly being alone,

Alone to think about what you’ve done wrong,

Alone to think about what could’ve happened instead.

Smell the absence of smells you’d grown accustomed to having around,

The absence of sweet perfume or shampoo,

The absence of their deodorant or their muscle cream.

Feel the way your throat closes and your heart quickens,

The way you choke on shallow breaths,

The way you suffocate on your own sobs.

Feel the walls of regret closing in around you,

Feel the air thick with remorse,

Feel the heartache eat you from the inside out,

Feel the hurt and pain ripple through your being,

Feel something.

You’re not numb,

You do care,

You made a mistake,

Now go and fix it.
