Anglers in Gisborne-Tatapouri Sports Fishing Club’s big marlin and tuna hunt are buzzing with excitement after two striped marlin were landed in the first few hours of the four-day competition.

Club president Roger Faber said the early marlin catches in the Liquorland Marlin and Tuna Hunt were great news.

Michael Bond caught the first one off the boat Magnum, skippered by Mike Richmond. It was heading back to port to weigh the fish between 1 and 2pm.

The other marlin was landed by Murray Doleman, owner-skipper of Taranui.

Mr Faber said conditions this morning were “very pleasant”.

“It is overcast and we have light north-east wind, about five knots. We hope the weather continues to behave itself and we can get out again tomorrow morning.”

The competition has a $50,000 purse and a $10,000 cash prize for the heaviest marlin or tuna.
