AN earthquake that measured magnitude 5.1 struck shortly after 3pm today and was widely felt throughout the region.

The quake happened at 3.08pm, and was centred 25km south-east of Matawai, at a depth of 29km.

It was felt in Gisborne city as a sharp jolt that rattled furniture, and the swaying lingered for up to 30 seconds afterwards.

GNS Science has described it as a “strong” quake.

It was widely felt throughout the North Island and as far south as Christchurch.
