SWANSONG VISIT: It was a special story time for Lachie Scott yesterday with his great grandmother Joy Watson coming in to read her top-selling book ‘Grandpa’s Slippers’ to a captive audience of three year olds.
A mother of nine, Mrs Watson is now a grandmother to 27 and a great grandmother of two. All her children have followed in her footsteps in some way with her daughter Mary-Anne publishing two novels for young adults. Grandpa’s Slippers has sold 190,000 copies since it was first published in 1989. Picture by Rebecca Grunwell

POPULAR children’s book author Joy Watson, now 78 years old, has been a regular visitor to schools over the years, through the Writers in Schools programme but she is not continuing her school visits.

Mrs Watson’s two great grandchildren attend Gisborne’s Farmyard where she read her beloved stories to the class for the last time.
