Ray Vasan dies

FORMER Tairawhiti District Health board member and general surgeon Ray Vasan has died in Wellington. He was 72.
Board chairman David Scott said Mr Vasan was “a bright and jovial guy” who would start or end hospital advisory committee meetings with a riddle.

One of his major contributions to the health board was correcting “an anomaly” concerning ACC payments, said Mr Scott.

Mr Vasan was aware of the many people in the district who presented for medical care late, which made their condition worse.

He was known for arranging quicker access to surgery. Mr Vasan held clinics on the Coast and carried out surgery there on the mobile surgical unit bus.

“He worked very hard with the Maori community,’’ Mr Scott said.

Mr Vasan and his wife Latha retained a house in Gisborne and still commuted between the two cities.
