Te Hapara cars targeted

A NUMBER of cars parked in driveways and on the street in the Te Hapara area were targeted by thieves on Saturday night and police suspect the culprits were members of a teenage bicycle gang.

Police received five or six reports of incidents of theft from cars in Centennial Crescent, Townley Street and Childers Road.

“We understand this group of young bike riders ride up driveways or along the road, trying vehicles to see if they are locked,” said Senior Sergeant Lincoln Sycamore.

“If they are unlocked they get inside to steal what they can find.”

Senior Sergeant Sycamore said vehicle owners need to ensure they secure their vehicles properly.

“If anyone notices suspicious behaviour around vehicles, particularly if it involves a group of teens on bikes, they should call police immediately.”
