THE 19-year-old man who evaded police for three hours in a vehicle pursuit on Friday has now been charged with a wider range of offences.

The teen was arrested after a stolen utility was brought to a halt in a controlled vehicle stop on State Highway 2 at Waerenga a Hika.

The incident started with the alleged theft of avocados from a property at Makaraka early on Friday morning.

Police allege the teen drove the vehicle to Otoko Hill, where it was set alight, then stole the ute from a passerby who stopped to help.

“He now faces more charges — burglary, assault with a weapon, driving charges including reckless driving and failing to stop, theft and arson,” said Detective Sergeant Kevin Ford.

“We have established the car that caught alight on Otoko Hill was deliberately set on fire.”

A 30-year-old man who was arrested in the city soon after the avocado theft has been charged with burglary.

“Both men have been remanded in custody after an initial court appearance.”
