Healthy tourism figures for our region

MINISTRY of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) figures show that tourists spent an estimated $140 million in Gisborne in the year to October 2017.

That is up three percent compared with the year ended October 2016, according to MBIE’s Ocober regional tourism estimates.

MBIE manager of sector trends Mark Gordon said that of the tourism spend in Gisborne during the year to October 2017, international visitors spent $30 million (up 14 percent compared with the year to October 2016), and domestic tourists spent $110 million (up one percent) in that period.

“When it comes to the monthly expenditure, tourism spend in Gisborne for the month of October 2017 is up 16 percent compared with the month of October 2016,” Mr Gordon said.

The tourist spend last month was $12m.

Across New Zealand the tourism spend for the year to October 2017 was $27,431m, up 7 percent from the previous year.

Mr Gordon said MBIE developed the monthly regional tourism estimates in consultation with tourism industry representatives to create a better measurement of the value of tourism in the regions.
