THE driver of a freight truck and trailer unit escaped injury early this morning when his rig hit a bridge on State Highway 2 just north of Muriwai on its way to Gisborne.

Police and Fire and Emgergency NZ crews from Gisborne and Manutuke were called to the crash at 4.30am.

“The driver had managed to get out of the rig on his own and was not injured,” a senior firefighter said.

“One lane of the highway was closed by the crash, but the road remained open.”

A crane from CR Taylor Ltd was called in later in the morning to remove the truck.
