Female hitchhiker rides to police cells

A FEMALE hitchhiker picked up outside Wairoa on Thursday night and brought to Gisborne ended up in a police station cell after it was discovered she was wanted.

Police said at some point after being picked up by a passing motorist, the woman told the driver that she actually wanted to go to Napier, not Gisborne.

“It’s thought she may have been standing on the wrong side of the road when hitching but we are not sure,” police said.

“So the driver thoughtfully dropped her off at the Gisborne police station to see if we could help her out.”

Police said initially they were concerned about the hitchhiking woman and discussed shouting her a meal, a bus ticket and potentially a bed for the night.

“In the meantime, her details were checked out on our system and after a few inquiries it was discovered the woman was wanted for burglary and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.”

The charges relate to incidents in Hawke’s Bay and Manurewa.

The 20-year-old woman, who was from Napier, was arrested.

“So she got her bed for the night, albeit not as salubrious as she probably was expecting.”

The woman appeared in Gisborne District Court yesterday and was released on bail to appear later this month in the Napier court.
