Traffic north from Gisborne on State Highway 2 was delayed for hours yesterday by the crash five kilometres south of Matawai. It took contractors from Gisborne and Tauranga until mid-afternoon to empty freight from the overturned rig and remove the damaged trailers from the road.
Herald photographer Paul Rickard took this series of pictures at the site, starting with the truck being cleared from the road and ending with its cargo being collected and loaded on to another truck.

A CRANE and hi-ab from CR Taylor Ltd and a winch truck from Tauranga spent more than five hours clearing a truck and trailer unit that tipped over and blocked State Highway 2 south of Matawai yesterday.

“It was a tricky job, with the front trailer hanging in mid-air across one side of the road and the rear trailer hanging in mid-air over a drain on the other side,” said Dave Taylor of CR Taylor.

The tractor unit of the truck stayed upright in the crash. The 45-year-old driver suffered minor injuries and was treated and discharged from Gisborne Hospital.

Freight from the truck was transferred to other trucks.

Do you think Gladstone Road Bridge should have its concrete parapet walls converted to steel railings on one or both of its sides as part of the upgrade and widening under way?
