FLOODING and slips forced the Waioeka Gorge to close between Opotiki and Gisborne yesterday afternoon.

The gorge was open by 9pm last night and is still open but New Zealand Transport Agency says motorists should continue to take care.

Only one is lane open in places and some minor flooding has not yet receded. Crews will clear debris today.

Further slips might occur so people should drive to the conditions.

Rainfall around the region was varied. Gisborne District Council figures show Matawai Station received 89mm, Mahaki Station 32mm and the GDC rain gauge in Stout Street received 34mm.

Farms around Motu received well over 100mm of rain yesterday. Tairawhiti Civil Defence and Emergency said before travelling, you should check the NZTA website for road conditions as they can change quickly.

Last night was another sticky one and today a high of 29 was forecast, with humidity at 77 percent at 9.30am. Highs for the rest of the week range between 27 and 30 degrees, with overnight lows of 17 and 18 degrees.
