Inner harbour upgrade starts

THE $3.7 million inner harbour upgrade project has started, with contractors at work on the replacement of water and wastewater pipes over the next 10 weeks.

The project aims to make the inner harbour the hub of the Tairawhiti Navigations project. The work includes a new carpark adjacent to the Plunket building and redevelopment of The Works carpark.

Native trees will be planted, new lighting installed and a pedestrian connection to Rakaiatane Road will be created. The first phase of the project will be completed in May.

Project manager Kylie Dowding said construction needed to occur in the dry summer period.

“Surrounding businesses were engaged prior to construction commencing and the contractor is working with the affected businesses and events, like the latest fishing competition and cruise ship visit, to ensure minimal disruption.”

The second phase of the project starts in October.
