Work has started on long awaited roadworks on Gladstone Road.

First planned for February, Tairawhiti Roads general manager Dave Hadfield said the weather, resources and asphalt delivery held up the project.

Today’s work by contractor Downer is centred on the area between Derby and Cobden Streets, with parking removed on both sides of the road.

Motorists will be unable to cross the centre-line along that section of the road to turn right into any driveway.

They will need to plan their trip to any of the retailers along this stretch of road so they can turn left.

Mr Hadfield said it would be inconvenient in the short-term but long-term it would be better for the city.

“Travelling along Gladstone Road will be a much more enjoyable experience when the work is completed.”

Work was scheduled to run from 7am to 8pm Mondays to Saturdays, with the possibility of some work on Sundays if needed.
