The proposed closure of the ANZ bank’s Wairoa branch has dismayed kaumatua Pauline Tangiora.

ANZ announced the proposal to close its Queen Street branch earlier this month.

She hopes the bank will come back with a plan for reduced hours of business, rather than a complete closure.

Mrs Tangiora said ANZ board chairman Sir John Key did not know what rural living was about.

She worked with a lot of people through counselling, and often sent them to the Wairoa branch to talk to their bank manager or to the staff if they had a problem.

“Job insecurity in rural areas is high and people need that assistance to help tide them over.

“I think our staff are a very concerned group of people, who appreciate giving a face-to-face service, talking about their client’s finances.

“They treat them with dignity.

“People are human beings . . . and many of us are the older clients of ANZ.”

Mrs Tangiora is a JP, and has received the Queen’s Service Order and Queen’s Service Medal.
