Tairawhiti Civil Defence Emergency had a practice run to see how the new Emergency Co-ordination Centre would work when it is needed.

Civil Defence manager Louise Bennett said everything went well in the new space.

Mrs Bennett says in an event requiring a large-scale co-ordinated response the council chambers, committee and training rooms at the council would become the ECC.

This is where liaison people from emergency services would go to work with Civil Defence response staff to respond to the emergency.

This part of the council building was built to the highest earthquake standard (IL4), as nationally it is a requirement for ECCs to be housed in buildings meeting that standard.
