Mistrial ruling puts end to robbery case

Three men accused of robbing the Kaiti Mall TAB and on trial this week in Gisborne District Court have been discharged.

Early yesterday, presiding Judge Brooke Gibson declared a mistrial for an undisclosed reason.

Sidney Hapi Rutene, 23, Aaron Stephen Reedy, 40, and Jacob Noanoa, 22, were free to go.

It was the second time the case had ended with a mistrial. A trial in February was also abandoned.

Prosecutor Clayton Walker told the judge the Crown would not seek to hold a further trial.
