Suspicious car fire in Kaiti house driveway

A stationwagon parked in the driveway of a house in Ida Road in Kaiti caught fire in suspicious circumstances in the early hours of Sunday morning and police have an inquiry under way.

Fire and Emergency NZ sent a crew to the scene just before 1am on Sunday.

“The 2005 Toyota stationwagon was parked at the end of the home’s driveway, near the footpath,” a senior firefighter said.

“Someone in the house happened to look out a window, saw the back of the vehicle on fire, and called 111.”

Fortunately, the fire was put out before it could take full hold of the vehicle.

“Most of the damage was external.

“The rear bumper was burned off, but there was very little damage to the interior of the vehicle.

“The cause was suspicious. An accelerant appeared to have been used.

“Police were called.”
