Saturday am coldest yet — -3.6C frost

Gisborne’s coldest morning of the year arrived on cue with the winter solstice.

The solstice was on the night of Thursday June 21, marking the longest night and shortest days. Our crispest morning so far was on Saturday morning.

The air temperature plummeted to just 0.5 degrees Celsius, while the ground temperature recorded a minus 3.6C frost.

Both figures are the chilliest so far this year but nowhere near the all-time record.

The lowest air temperature on record for Gisborne is minus 3.3C in 1968, while the hardest frost on record is minus 8.6C in 1957.

This month has seen the coolest mornings so far, with eight below-zero frosts to date.

The cloud cover brought by 15 days of rain has shut out the sun this month.

There have been just over 80 hours of sunshine to Saturday morning — well short of the MetService mean of 122 hours for June.

The Niwa mean for sunshine over the 1937 to 1980 period is almost the same at 127 hours, but the more recent 30-year average (1981-2010) is just over 96 hours, indicating a cloudier trend.
