The southern Makorori rest area along State Highway 35 will be closed today from 5pm for chip sealing.

It will reopen tomorrow at 3pm.

Tairawhiti Roads general manager Dave Hadfield says people should consider safety when parking in an alternative location.

“It’s dangerous to try to walk down from the lookout spot at the top of Makorori headland,” Mr Hadfield says.

“So if there’s good surf on Thursday morning, or if you’re wanting to enjoy the sunshine in the area, please find another place further along to safely park.”

The upgrade to this area is one of seven rest areas along the Coast to receive improvements, thanks to $700,000 of Crown funding as part of the Tairawhiti Economic Action Plan.

Sites at Anaura Bay, Tikitiki and Te Araroa will be chip-sealed on Friday.

Works will start soon in Uawa (Tolaga Bay) and Tokomaru Bay to upgrade sites to fully-serviced rest areas.

Works across all seven sites will be completed by the end of the month.
