ROAD CLOSED: The Tarndale Road was closed yesterday morning by Tairawhiti Roads after this subsidence and journey manager Helen Harris said it showed “we are not out of the woods yet on our roads network”. Picture supplied by Gisborne District Council

Tairawhiti Roads was forced to close the Tarndale Road on Tuesday after a piece of the road slumped.

The situation became a whole lot worse yesterday when the whole width of the road and a big chunk of the bank above it disappeared.

“We are assessing the damage and at this stage it is closed for an unknown period,” said Tairawhiti Roads journey manager Helen Harris.

“It is still moving. There are further cracks on both sides of the dropout and we do not want staff going too close at this stage, as there is still water flowing out. We will not be doing any work on it in the short term.”
