Pizza put alarms to test

Firefighters were called to a house in Cheeseman Road in inner Kaiti late last night after the residents were woken by smoke alarms to find the home filled with smoke from unattended cooking.

Fire and Emergency NZ sent an appliance to the house just after midnight.

“Teenagers in the house were woken by the home’s smoke alarms, found the house full of smoke and roused their sleeping mother,” a senior firefighter said.

The smoke came from a pizza accidentally left in the oven.

“The teens and their mum called 111, got out safely and were not affected by the smoke.

“The working smoke alarms definitely paid off.

“It could have ended badly,” the senior firefighter said.

The fire crew used a positive pressure ventilation system to air the home out.

“Again, this incident shows the value of having smoke alarms in the home that work — and keep looking while you are cooking!”
