Steak of Station entries at 29, organisers ‘rapt’

Former A&P Show president Andrew Allan (pictured) is shown getting on with the tough job of judging.

Organisers of the Silver Fern Farms (SFF)-sponsored Steak of Station competition at the A&P Spring Show were rapt with the number of entries received this year.

“To get 29 entries is bloody awesome,” said organiser Paul Kirkpatrick.

The cattle were trucked down to SFF’s Pacific plant at Hastings on Monday and the journey to find Gisborne/East Coast’s best tasting steak for 2018 began again. “They were judged in the hoof yesterday and will be judged on the hook tomorrow,” Mr Kirkpatrick said.

“The competition has been well supported again this year, which was really good, on the back of a wet and difficult winter.” The competition is open to prime steers or heifers (220-370 kg). The prizes include cartons of Silver Fern Farms cube roll.

The final steak tasting and judging will be on the Friday of the Show (October 12). The title was won last year by Whare-o-Paia Station owner Patrick Murphy from Tolaga Bay.
