Queue of logs

Logging trucks were backed up as far back as the Mobil Service Station on Wainui Road and down Crawford Road for a time yesterday afternoon as Eastland Port reopened following a closure brought about by an accident in which 29-year-old mother of two Shannon Brooke Rangihuna-Kemp was killed, struck by a log that came off a shuttle truck during log-loading operations.

Eastland Port was closed after the accident on Monday and half of yesterday for site investigation and as a mark of respect.

A blessing was held there yesterday morning before the port resumed operations around lunchtime. By 2pm, the logging trucks were flowing normally into the port. Shannon will lie at Muriwai marae.

The church services will be Wednesday and Thursday night at 7pm, followed by the poroporoaki (eulogy) on Thursday night. The tangihanga (funeral service) is on Friday followed by the burial at the whanau urupa.
