Service to heal and remember

The Presbyterian Church will host a special service tomorrow to mark the 150th anniversary of Te Kooti’s deadly raid on the settlers and local Maori at Matawhero.

The Remembrance and Reconciliation, Lament and Healing Service will be held at the historic Matawhero Presbyterian Church, starting at 10am.

Descendants of some of the families involved at Matawhero, including the families of Major Reginald Biggs and Captain James Wilson, both killed at Matawhero, and a Ringatu priest, a descendant of Te Kooti’s followers, will speak.

After the service, people are invited to drive around the district with local guides, to visit significant sites including Makaraka and Waerenga a Hika.
