For the past eight months Gisborne recorded some of the strongest growth in the country for the amount of money swiped through eftpos machines.

The figures were provided by Paymark, which processes 75 percent of all electronic spending around New Zealand.

For the period December 1 to 7, it showed Gisborne had the second-highest increase of spending compared with the same time last year.

Gisborne was up 5.5 percent — second only to Southland, which had an increase of 6.4 percent.

Tourism is tipped as a top reason for the increase.

Heart of Gisborne manager Lana Davy said they were seeing more tourists.

Another reason was Gisborne had been “in a bit of a lull”, so a positive turnaround pushed this region to the top.

Ms Davy said there had also been a rise in the popularity of Gisborne.

“We just have to keep that rise happening.”
