Deer's day out

Meet Puri, a pet fawn hand-raised by the Land family of Whangara, who became an instant hit when she turned up on Midway Beach to watch Wainui Beach School students have a surfing lesson.

For 10-year-old Seve Royster., it was a magical moment coming up after a surf to meet a new friend on the beach.

Wainui Beach School principal Nolian Andrew said one of the school’s mothers, Sophie Land, had brought the young deer to school as part of discovery time and took the animal to the surfing lesson in advance.

Puri was found in an old dead puriri tree just before Christmas with no mother. Sophie says she goes everywhere with the family.

"She even scored a free ice cream at the dairy for her good manners the other day because she waited by herself at the door."
