‘Joy bringer’ draws on personal story to inspire others

Bringing joy to the world and helping businesses optimise employee engagement is inspirational speaker Karin Volo’s mission.

Hosted by BDO, Mrs Volo will talk on Thursday about the extreme challenges that have helped shape her, how people can love their job, and how to bring joy into their lives despite difficult circumstances.

Described as an “evolution expert” and “chief joy bringer”, Mrs Volo specialises in personal and corporate development. She draws from her personal experiences to help people and companies thrive during difficult transitions.

Topics she addresses include five keys to boost people engagement, productivity and profits.

“She looks at how to engage someone who just turns up to their job to being optimally engaged,” says BDO director Kylee Potae.

“She looks at saying ‘what happens in business when you bring in strategies, open communication, creativity and how do you get someone in an organisation to bring their whole self?’”

After her wrongful imprisonment for almost four years due to accusations of fraud committed in her name by her ex-husband, Mrs Volo researched businesses that had come through major crises, and developed five key elements to better engage employees and improve the business’s bottom line.

Those key elements are collaboration, creativity, celebration, contribution and communication.

Before her arrest Mrs Volo had already started her own business, which was based on empowering people.

Her career began in recruitment but she found she had skills in helping people tap their true potential.

While waiting for a flight one day, though, she was arrested and detained for almost four years as authorities tried to decide whether she should be tried in the United States or in Mexico where her American father had been transferred when she was a child.

During her incarceration she found ways to stay positive.

Her case was eventually dismissed and the charges cleared.

Her experiences were put into words in the book 1,352 Days: An Inspirational Journey From Jail To Joy.

She also co-authored the best-seller Engage!

“Her story is about keeping herself out of a dark place, thinking about her mind and how to set her mind free,” says Mrs Potae.

Mrs Volo’s goal now is to live with purpose and inspire others with her story.

  • Karin Volo will speak at the Quality Emerald Hotel on Thursday from 9.30am to midday. Entry is free. A lunch will follow. To register (for catering purposes), contact Zoe Spedding at BDO Gisborne on 869 1400 or email zoe.spedding@bdo.co.nz by the end of today.
