Spirited women arrive

Hundreds of “spirited women” arrive in Gisborne today to take part in a unique adventure race.

Speaking ahead of the weekend’s Tairawhiti Gisborne Spirited Women All Women’s Adventure Race, event organiser Kezia Trask said most of the expected 1600 women would start arriving from today, with most staying for at least two nights.

“This afternoon, we have the registration expo, so they will be coming to register their team.

At the race meeting tonight the women will be given their maps and all the course information, ready for Saturday morning.

“The whole course is marked already, so we are ready to go. We just have the final public course points to put out.

Gisborne’s bicycle shops have been flat out sourcing rental bikes for the event, with at least one resorting to a social media plea for anyone willing to lend their bike.

Accommodation options are limited this weekend too for anyone not involved in the race. Ms Trask said all the city’s Airbnb and Book-a-bach listings had sold out, and hotel and motel rooms are in short supply.
