A fire in the old weighbridge building near the Gladstone Road bridge in the early hours of yesterday morning was arson.

The interior of the historic building was gutted by the fire.

Fire and Emergency NZ was called by police at around 4.30am yesterday.

The fire was spotted by a passing police patrol.

“There was considerable damage to the internal structure of the building, and to the roof,” a senior firefighter said.

The fire burned a hole through the tiles in one part of the roof.

“The painting by the late Graham Mudge on the outside of the building remains intact.”

Firefighters were at the scene for about an hour.

Specialist fire investigator Derek Goodwin and police were called in to investigate.

“We have established that the fire was an arson,” Mr Goodwin said.

The building remains cordoned off as a crime scene.
