Cement truck slides into drain

A TRUCK driver suffered minor injuries this morning when his rig slid off State Highway 2 and went partially on to its side in a drain.

It happened at a spot on the Gisborne side of Otoko Hill.

Police, a Fire and Emergency NZ crew from Te Karaka and a St John Ambulance from Gisborne were called out at around 7.20am this morning.

“The semi-trailer was on its way to Gisborne carrying bulk cement,” a senior firefighter said.

“The driver has some minor injuries and was transported to Gisborne Hospital by ambulance.”

The highway remained open.

“The truck was off the road in the drain, but there may be some traffic disruption when the truck gets recovered.

“It will be a difficult job because of the weight of the vehicle.”
