Recovery operation

The 33-year-old driver of this bulk cement carrier from Waihi was treated and discharged from Gisborne Hospital yesterday after the truck slid into a ditch near Otoko.

The recovery of the rig was difficult because of the weight of the truck.

A heavy lift crane from Tauranga was called in to hoist the 30-tonne vehicle out of the ditch on the Gisborne side of Otoko Hill on State Highway 2.

The highway was closed for short periods during the day and for about 45 minutes last night while the vehicle was finally recovered.

The truck was brought to Gisborne by Gisborne Hiabs.
