A truck driver from the Bay of Plenty was injured yesterday when his rig went out of control and rolled on to its side against roadside barriers near Waiata Road on State Highway 2 in the Waioeka Gorge.

“The man, aged in his 60s, was trapped in the badly damaged cab for about 90 minutes until freed by firefighters,” an emergency services spokesman said.

“It was fortunate there was no passenger in the vehicle. The passenger side of the cab was crushed. The driver suffered moderate injuries to his upper body.”

Once extricated, he was flown by the ECT rescue helicopter to Whakatane Hospital.
