Partner of Kathleen Kawana found by Police

The man police wanted to talk to about the death of former Flaxmere and Wellington woman Kathleen Kawana was her partner and he has now been taken into custody.

The body of 46-year-old Ms Kawana was found in a vacant house near Ruatoria on August 3, and had been in the lounge room of the house for some time.

The whanau of 42-year-old Ri Nikora had not seen or heard from him for nearly two months.

“Police located Mr Nikora in Wellington yesterday,” said inquiry head Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin Ford of the Gisborne CIB.

“He has been arrested and charged on an unrelated matter.

“He is in police custody.”

Ms Kawana’s death remains “unexplained” at this stage.

Police have made no comment so far on the likely cause of death.

They had wanted to speak to Mr Nikora because they believe he can help them with their investigation.

His family have said he was brought up in the Ruatoria and Mohaka areas.

They said at one time he lived in a house not far from the one at Ngarimu’s Hill outside Ruatoria where Ms Kawana’s body was found.
