Funds will support playground update

IT’S all about the kids.

Gisborne Countdown staff and customers ‘‘are an awesome team’’ in their support of Gisborne Hospital’s Planet Sunshine.

A Hauora Tairawhiti spokeswoman said the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal had raised $40,000 last year for Gisborne Hospital and a similar amount was expected this year.

“The money will be put towards the redevelopment of the Planet Sunshine playground, and plans are well under way.”

Kiri Hannifin, Countdown’s general manager of corporate affairs, safety and sustainability, said Countdown was humbled by the generosity of its customers and the fundraising efforts of supermarket teams in Gisborne and throughout New Zealand.

“Together our team and customers help make such a significant difference to thousands of sick Kiwi kids and their whanau.”

Gisborne Countdown customers can get behind the Appeal by donating at the checkout or buying a raffle ticket in-store.

Since the appeal began in 2007, Countdown and its customers have donated $12.8 million for medical equipment and other initiatives in children’s hospitals and wards around the country.

The Hauora Tairawhiti spokeswoman said Planet Sunshine had been fortunate to receive funds towards the new playground from several other groups.

“Gisborne Road Pirates have donated several times and will hold another fundraising ride (on Saturday).

“Aurora Gifted Children’s group carried out various fundraising activities and contributed to the design of the playground.”
